Punting Really is Winning in Iowa

I didn’t script this game

How do you exaggerate the concerns and complaints of a fanbase from the past 12 months? Do whatever the Iowa Hawkeyes did on Saturday. It is truly impressive to pick up 7 points through unconventional scoring methods. How are my fellow fans dealing with an ugly win?

True, Iowa might be the worst FBS offense after all games are actually played.

Answer: Iowa fans are not doing well. It’s understandable. This week’s College Football Therapy comes in an ugly win featuring my team, the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Iowa could not do anything against a team they expected to dominate at the line of scrimmage. The Hawkeye’s QB had a whopping QBR of 1.1, which was coincidentally right around the average yards per carry (1.6). Those are numbers you’d expect from a parked car.

*Warning, the box score I linked above has statistics pertaining to Iowa’s offense, which may be offensive to football fans.

Alright, I’ll try to respond to this one. The game was bad. Iowa’s offense as a whole did not look good. I’m an Iowa fan. I reluctantly watched that. There’s no denying the ugliness. But bad offensive performances, albeit not quite this bad, in game one aren’t new for Iowa.

Remember a few years back when Iowa needed two blocked field goals to beat FCS Northern Iowa? Remember more recently when we didn’t block that field goal against a different FCS Dakota school and wound up losing? Both seasons turned out to be 8+ win campaigns.

I’m not an optimist when it comes to Iowa football. I didn’t want to have to write this article.

But my job as an uncertified College Football Therapist isn’t put on hold when it is my fanbase is in need. The funniest (or saddest) part about Saturday is that my 2-year-old daughter kept saying that we were watching “baseball”. I kept trying to correct her, but she never wavered. I guess she won this argument. Still, firing an entire staff after the first game of the season might be a little hasty.

Is there nothing positive we can take from Saturday?

There’s the positive! #PuntingIsWinning
